Why Pittston roofs wear out
Two rivers and a valley
Pittston sits at the junction of two river valleys, and moisture is part of life here. Morning fog, damp air and shaded side yards between closely spaced houses give algae and moss a head start on north-facing roof slopes. Roofs that sit in the shadow of a neighbor's house are usually the first to show algae, and they deserve a closer look during an inspection. Winter brings snow, averaging about 45 inches a year at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport just up the road (1991–2020 normals). That snow comes with plenty of freeze-thaw cycles, which crack sealant, loosen flashing and drive ice under shingles at the eaves.
Flood memory
The rivers have tested this area hard. When the Susquehanna hit a record 42.66-foot crest at Wilkes-Barre during Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011, neighboring West Pittston was devastated, with nearly 900 homes damaged. Flooding from Agnes in 1972 left its mark across Greater Pittston too. Homes that took on water years ago sometimes have repaired framing or rebuilt additions, and we keep an eye out for that when the old roof comes off.
Coal-era housing on mined ground
Pittston grew on anthracite, and the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster, when the Susquehanna broke into the mine workings nearby, flooded mine workings across the valley and left much of the region's mining infrastructure unusable. That history left two things that matter for roofs:
- Older housing. Double-blocks, narrow two-and-a-half-story frame homes, and back additions with low-slope roofs are everywhere in the city.
- Old mine workings below. The area has seen subsidence since the 1940s. Settling can twist a roofline or crack flashing where an addition joins the house. We point it out when we see it.
Signs your Pittston roof is in trouble
- Granules piling up at the bottom of the downspouts.
- Curled, cracked or missing shingles, especially along the ridge and rakes where the wind hits first.
- Water stains on upstairs ceilings near chimneys, dormers, or where a back addition meets the house.
- Icicles in the same spot every winter, a sign that attic heat is feeding an ice dam.
- A ridge line that looks wavy from the street.
If you see any of those, call us for an inspection. We'll photograph what we find and tell you whether it calls for a repair or a replacement.
Pittston neighborhoods we cover
We work throughout the city of Pittston, from the Main Street business district and the blocks around City Hall to the Oregon Section and the Junction. We cover the residential streets off William Street, Broad Street and Kennedy Boulevard too. Across the river, over the Water Street bridge, we serve West Pittston. We're also in Pittston Township, Hughestown, Jenkins Township, Duryea, Avoca, Dupont, Exeter and Wyoming. Pittston is the self-described Quality Tomato Capital of the World, home of the annual Pittston Tomato Festival, and a lot of its streets are tight enough that we plan dumpster placement before the first day of work.
Pittston is about halfway between two of our other service areas: Scranton to the north and Wilkes-Barre to the south. We also work regularly in Kingston and Dunmore. See the Luzerne County roofing page for the full list.
Permits and code in Pittston
Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) is enforced by each municipality. In the city, UCC permit applications go through the City of Pittston's Code Enforcement Office at City Hall. If your home is in Pittston Township, West Pittston or another nearby municipality, that municipality's code office handles it instead. The UCC exempts some residential repair work statewide, and local rules decide what a re-roof needs. We confirm the requirement, and when a permit is needed, we pull it and schedule the inspection.
Permit rules differ from one side of the river to the other, so we never assume. The roof itself follows the residential code adopted under the UCC. That means an ice barrier at the eaves, underlayment across the deck, drip edge, and new step and counter flashing at walls and chimneys.
How a roof replacement works with us
- Inspection and photos. We check the roof surface, flashing, gutters, ventilation and attic, and show you what we find.
- Written estimate. Tear-off, deck repair, the shingle system, ventilation and flashing, all spelled out. Financing is available.
- Permit. We file with the city or your municipality.
- Tear-off. Down to the deck. We replace any bad boards and protect your house and yard.
- Installation. Ice barrier, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, architectural shingles and ridge ventilation.
- Cleanup. A dumpster on site at the end.
- Final walkthrough. We go over the finished roof and your warranty with you.
For storm jobs, we photograph the damage and can meet your adjuster on site. If you're not sure whether the damage came from a storm or just age, we'll tell you honestly what we see, even when the answer is that it isn't storm damage.
Double-blocks and shared roofs
Greater Pittston has plenty of double-blocks, and one neighbor is often ready for a new roof before the other. We can replace your side and tie it in properly at the party line with flashing and underlayment overlap, so the seam stays watertight. If both owners want to do the whole roof together, we can quote it as one job, which usually means a cleaner ridge and a simpler schedule for everyone.
