Siding protects more than your curb appeal
Your siding is the outer skin of your house. It sheds rain and wind so the sheathing, framing and insulation behind it stay dry. When siding cracks, loosens or warps, water gets behind it. Often you can't see the damage until it shows up as rot, mold or a stain on an interior wall.
We handle both ends of the job, from fixing a few damaged pieces to replacing the siding on the whole house.
Siding repair
When a repair makes sense
- A few cracked, holed or broken pieces from hail, debris or a stray baseball
- Panels blown loose or off in a windstorm
- Damage from a fallen limb
- A section that has warped from heat, such as near a grill
- Loose trim or corner pieces letting water behind the siding
How we repair siding
- Assess. We find the damage, remove affected pieces and check the sheathing and house wrap underneath for moisture or rot.
- Repair the wall. Any soft or rotted sheathing gets replaced, and the weather barrier is patched before new siding goes on.
- Match and install. We match the profile, texture and color as closely as possible and fasten the new pieces so they expand and contract properly.
- Seal and clean up. We finish around trim and openings and leave the site clean.
After storms, we document storm damage with photos and can meet your adjuster on site. Coverage questions are for your insurance company.
Siding replacement
Signs it's time for new siding
- Widespread warping, buckling or bulging
- Brittle, cracking siding that breaks when touched
- Rot or soft spots in the wall behind it
- Moisture, mold or peeling paint inside on exterior walls
- Heavy, uneven fading or chalking
- Repairs becoming frequent
- A house that just looks tired, especially if you're preparing to sell
Our replacement process
- Free estimate. We measure the house, look at the condition of the walls and talk through styles and colors.
- Tear-off. We remove the old siding and inspect the sheathing underneath.
- Wall repair and weather barrier. Damaged sheathing gets replaced, and the walls are wrapped and flashed around windows and doors.
- Installation. New siding, trim, corners and accessories go on to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Cleanup and walkthrough. We haul away the debris, clean up and walk the finished job with you.
Siding materials
The right material depends on your house, budget and how much upkeep you want:
- Vinyl is low maintenance, available in many colors and profiles, and never needs painting.
- Fiber cement looks like painted wood, resists rot and insects and has a heavier, more solid feel.
- Wood has a classic look but needs regular painting or staining to stay protected.
We'll help you compare the options for your home during the estimate.
Siding, roof and gutters work together
Water that gets past your roof edge or overflows your gutters ends up running down your siding. When we replace siding, we pay close attention to the flashing where the roof meets the walls. We'll also tell you if your gutters are part of the problem. Planning a roof replacement too? Doing both together gives you one coordinated exterior. Get a roof ballpark with our Instant Roof Quote. And if a storm hit the whole house, see our storm damage roof repair page.
Caring for your siding
A little attention keeps siding looking good and doing its job longer:
- Wash it gently once a year with a soft brush and garden hose. High-pressure washing can force water behind the panels.
- Keep plants and mulch back from the bottom few inches of siding so it can dry out.
- Trim shrubs and tree limbs that rub against the house.
- Check caulking around windows, doors and trim, and reseal where it has cracked.
- Look after storms for loose, cracked or missing pieces, and get them fixed before water gets behind them.
Hidden water damage behind siding
Siding can look fine from the street while water does damage behind it. Watch for these clues: peeling paint or bubbling drywall on the inside of exterior walls, musty smells in closets on outside walls, soft spots when you press on the siding, and stains below windows. Water often gets in where siding meets windows, doors, decks and roof lines, where flashing is missing or has failed. When we repair or replace siding, we fix the flashing and weather barrier at these spots, not just the panels you can see.
