Roofing services in Hazleton
Hazleton is the second-largest city in Luzerne County, sitting high on the mountain at the south end of the county. The weather up here is tougher on roofs than in the valley, and we build for it:
- Roof replacement: full tear-off and a new architectural shingle system with generous ice barrier coverage.
- Roof repair: wind-lifted shingles, chimney and valley leaks, and failed flashing.
- Storm damage repair: inspection and repair after wind, hail and fallen limbs. We can meet your adjuster on site.
- Roof inspection and maintenance: a pre-winter check that can save you a ceiling.
- Roof ventilation: the most important ice-dam fix on a mountain-town roof.
- Flat roofing (EPDM): for porches and rear additions.
- Gutter guards, gutters and siding.

Why Hazleton roofs wear out
Elevation, wind and snow
Hazleton sits at roughly 1,689 feet. That's much higher than the Wyoming Valley towns to the north, and it gets real mountain weather. The city averages about 47 inches of snow a year, and snow on an exposed ridge sits longer and drifts harder than it does down in Wilkes-Barre. Winter wind lifts shingle tabs and breaks sealant bonds, especially on older roofs. Freeze-thaw cycles work water into every gap. Ice dams are a fact of life on warm, under-ventilated attics. Spring storms can bring wind damage too.
On a Hazleton roof, we pay extra attention to:
- Ice barrier coverage at the eaves and in every valley.
- Ventilation that keeps the attic cold, so snow doesn't melt from underneath.
- Nailing and starter courses along the edges, where wind gets under a roof first.
- Flashing at chimneys and walls, where freeze-thaw opens gaps first.
A coal-and-silk-era city
Hazleton became a borough in 1857 and a city in 1891, and much of the older housing dates from its anthracite and industrial peak. You'll find brick and frame rowhomes and double-blocks on the downtown grid around Broad, Church, Wyoming and Laurel streets, bigger older homes on the side streets, and newer single-family homes on the outskirts. Older roofs in the city often have multiple layers, board sheathing and chimneys re-flashed more times than anyone remembers. We sort all of that out at tear-off.
Snow load and heavy storms
A heavy, wet snow followed by rain puts a lot of weight on a roof, and Hazleton gets its share of those storms. Most sound roofs handle it fine. Older roofs with sagging decks, undersized framing or rot at the eaves are the ones that show stress first. If you notice a new sag in the roofline, upstairs doors starting to stick after a big storm, or fresh cracks in upstairs ceilings, have the roof looked at. We check the deck and eaves during every inspection and tell you what we see. Structural concerns go to an engineer.
Gutters and ice
On a Hazleton roof, clogged gutters hold meltwater right at the edge, where it freezes and makes ice dams worse. Keeping them clear with gutter cleaning, or adding guards, helps meltwater get off the roof and away from the house before the next freeze.
Hazleton neighborhoods we cover
We cover the city from downtown, around City Hall, Broad Street and the Pennsylvania Theatre of Performing Arts, out through the residential grid along Vine, Green and Wyoming streets. We cover the neighborhoods around Memorial Park, the numbered streets on the city's edges, and the homes along Fisher's Avenue. We also work in neighboring West Hazleton and Hazle Township. Not far from the city sits Eckley Miners' Village, a preserved patch town that's a good reminder of how long people have been keeping roofs over their heads on this mountain.
Hazleton sits at the southern end of our Luzerne County service area. Our Pennsylvania office is in Plymouth, and we also cover Nanticoke, Wilkes-Barre and the rest of the county. See the Luzerne County roofing page for the full list.
Permits and code in Hazleton
Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) is administered by each municipality. In the city, permits run through the City of Hazleton's Code, Licensing and Permits offices at City Hall, next to Zoning and Inspections. West Hazleton and Hazle Township run their own processes. The UCC exempts some residential repair work statewide, and local rules decide what a re-roof needs. We confirm the requirement for your address, and when a permit is needed, we pull it and schedule the inspection.
Our roofs meet the residential code adopted under the UCC. That includes an ice barrier at the eaves, which is a must at this elevation, underlayment, drip edge, and proper step and counter flashing.

Repair or replace before winter?
Timing matters more up on the mountain. A roof that limps through a mild valley winter can fail badly in Hazleton when ice and wind come together. If your roof is on the edge, fall is the best time to decide. We'll give you an honest read in time to repair what can be repaired, or to replace before the snow arrives. A replacement also brings the ice barrier, underlayment and ventilation up to current standards all at once.
Scheduling around mountain weather
Weather on the mountain changes fast, and we plan for it. We watch the forecast closely, don't open up a roof when rain or snow is coming, and strip and dry-in in sections so the house is never left exposed overnight. Most Hazleton homes are finished in one to a few days, depending on size, layers and conditions. Late-season jobs need extra care, because shingle sealant strips need warmth to bond properly. If your replacement can wait, we'll talk with you about timing.
