Why Nanticoke roofs wear out
River-valley weather
Nanticoke sits on the Susquehanna River at the southwest end of the Wyoming Valley. The river keeps the air damp, and shaded roofs stay wet long enough for algae and moss to take hold. That's where the black streaks and green patches come from on so many north-facing slopes. Winter brings about 45 inches of snow a year on average, based on 1991–2020 records at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton airport. It also brings frequent freeze-thaw swings that crack sealant, loosen flashing and build ice dams at the eaves.
A coal city's houses
Nanticoke was settled around 1800, became a borough in 1874 and a city in 1926. It grew as an anthracite mining community. Nearby Concrete City, built in 1911, is one of the region's better-known pieces of company housing. Much of Nanticoke's housing comes from that era:
- Double-blocks with two households under a single roof.
- Narrow frame homes on small lots, with steep gables and dormers.
- Low-slope back porches and kitchen additions.
- Chimneys whose flashing has been patched many times.
Decades of re-roofing mean we often find several old layers and board sheathing under the shingles. We check the deck during tear-off and fix it before the new roof goes on.
Mining legacy
Like much of the Wyoming Valley, Nanticoke sits above old mine workings. On a roof, settling can show up as a wavy ridge, a dip in the deck or cracked flashing where an addition meets the house. We'll point out anything we see. Structural questions belong with an engineer.
Low-slope back additions
A lot of Nanticoke homes have a steep main roof in front and a nearly flat roof over the back kitchen or porch. Those low-slope sections are a common source of leaks, especially where they meet the main wall of the house. Many have been re-covered with roll roofing or patched with tar more than once. We replace them with EPDM rubber roofing, a single membrane made for low slopes, and install new flashing at the wall so the joint stays dry.
Signs your roof needs a closer look
Granules washing out of the downspouts, curled or missing shingles, stains on upstairs ceilings, the same icicles every winter, and moss on the shaded side of the roof are all worth a call. We'll inspect, photograph what we find and tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes sense.
Nanticoke neighborhoods we cover
We work in every section of the city: Honey Pot, Downtown along Main Street, and the Hanover Section. We cover the streets around the Luzerne County Community College main campus, which sits on 167 acres within the city. We also serve neighboring Hanover Township, Newport Township and Plymouth Township. Many Nanticoke streets are narrow, and a lot of homes share alleys, so we plan dumpster and ladder placement before the job starts.
Nanticoke is a short drive from our Pennsylvania office in Plymouth, and we regularly work in Wilkes-Barre, Kingston and Hazleton. See the Luzerne County roofing page for everywhere we go.
Permits and code in Nanticoke
Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) is administered locally. In the city, building permits go through the City of Nanticoke's Code Enforcement department. Neighboring townships run their own processes. The UCC exempts some residential repair work statewide, and local rules decide what a re-roof needs. We confirm the requirement for your address, and when a permit is needed, we pull it and schedule the inspection.
The roof itself follows the residential code adopted under the UCC. That means an ice barrier at the eaves, underlayment across the deck, drip edge, and proper step and counter flashing.
How a roof replacement works with us
- Inspection. We check the roof, flashing, gutters, ventilation and attic.
- Written estimate. A clear scope covering tear-off, deck repair, materials and ventilation. Financing is available.
- Permit. We handle the city paperwork.
- Tear-off. Down to the deck, with rotted boards replaced and your property protected.
- Installation. Ice barrier, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, architectural shingles and ridge vent.
- Cleanup. Debris hauled off.
- Walkthrough. We go over the finished roof and your warranty with you.
After a storm, we document the damage with photos and can meet your adjuster on site. Because we're a short drive away in Plymouth, a follow-up visit is easy to schedule if something needs a second look.
Repair or replace?
If your roof is leaking from one spot and the shingles still have life in them, a targeted repair is usually the smart move, and we'll tell you so. If the shingles are curling and shedding granules, the deck is soft, or the roof has been patched in several places, a replacement usually costs less than chasing leaks for years. Either way, you'll see our photos and get a straight answer before you spend anything.
Ventilation: the part of the roof you don't see
A lot of older Nanticoke homes have little or no attic ventilation. In winter, trapped heat melts the snow from underneath and feeds ice dams. The rest of the year, trapped moisture slowly rots the deck and shortens shingle life. When we replace a roof, we balance intake and ridge ventilation for your attic, which is one of the simplest ways to get more years out of the new roof.
