What happens if it rains in the middle of the job?

We watch the forecast closely and only open up as much roof as we can dry in the same day. If weather turns, the exposed sections are covered and protected until we can safely get back up.

A roof replacement is a big project, so it's natural to ask, "How long will this take?" You want your home protected and your life back to normal as quickly as possible. At Allabaugh Construction, we get this question on almost every estimate, so here's a straight answer.

For most asphalt shingle homes, a roof replacement takes anywhere from a single day to several days. Where your project lands in that range depends on the factors below.

Roof Size and Materials

The size of your roof plays the biggest role. A small ranch or Cape Cod can often be torn off and re-shingled in a day, while a large two-story home with a big, cut-up roof takes longer. The material matters too. We install architectural asphalt shingles, and those go on faster than specialty materials like slate or metal, which have their own installation requirements. Low-slope sections that need EPDM flat roofing add their own step.

Tear-Off and Decking

A replacement starts by removing the old roof down to the decking. If there are two layers of shingles, which is common on older homes in Mercer County and the Wyoming Valley, the tear-off takes longer. Once the decking is exposed, we can see its condition. Soft, rotted or delaminated boards have to be replaced before new underlayment goes on, and that can add time you can't know about until the old roof is off.

Roof Pitch and Complexity

Steep roofs require extra safety measures, such as harnesses, roof jacks and staging, and the crew has to move more carefully. Dormers, valleys, skylights and chimneys all need extra cutting and flashing work. A steep, complex roof takes longer than a simple, walkable gable of the same size.

Time of Year and Weather

Crews work year-round, but weather sets the pace. Rain, high wind and heavy snow can pause work, and a cold snap slows things down. In Northeast Pennsylvania, winters are typically colder and snowier than in central New Jersey, so winter scheduling up there takes more flexibility.
